Travelling World Community Film Festival in Regina April 14 to 16
The following excerpt was taken from the Planning committee of the Regina chapter of the Traveling World Community Film Festival.
From April 14 to 16, 2011 residents of Regina will have the chance to see and discuss films from the Traveling World Community Film Festival (TWCFF). The project is being led by students from several Regina high schools, with the support of teachers and parents.
The TWCFF has been operating for several years out of Courtney BC. The organization purchases the public performing rights of films and then a package of films is made available for showing at festivals in Canada. The theme of the films is social justice and human rights - covering a wider range of topics. (A list of the films is attached and more detailed information is also available.)
One of the films that is playing at the festival is:
Vanishing of the Bees Cathedral Community Centre 8:15pm 86 min. 2010 www.vanishingbees.com Director: Maryam Henein
Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.
Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between humankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers discuss possible alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting opinions abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this mystery. The bees have a message . . . but are we listening?
